Death Valley is such an unlikely place for a charcoal kiln since there are few trees. The Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, completed in 1877, are photographed in "colored infrared" i.e. the color from a visible light photo combined with the luminosity of infrared, a technique I invented.

Gladding, McBean is a 135 year old active factory of architectural ornamentation. In 1959, Ernst Kadel, the head modeler, died, and as a tribute to Ernst, his fellow workers left his office the same as it was on his last day. Lincoln, CA.

Meant to adorn the top of a column of some majestic building, this artifact will forever sit at the Gladding McBean factory in Lincoln, CA. In business since 1874, this probably has been here for some time.

As I slid near to the edge of the top of a deep slit canyon in Zion National Park, this scene has special significance since it would have been the last thing that I would have seen in this life. Zion National Park, UT.

A bug munches on the datura flower. It has been very busy. Sacred datura is the name of a poisonous perennial plant and ornamental flower of southwestern North America. It is sometimes used as a hallucinogen added to "Indian whiskey" because of its ritual intoxicating uses by many tribes. The flower has five narrow points spaced symmetrically around its rim. The bug only knows it tastes good. Of course it may be hallucinating! Zion National Park UT.

A fiddlehead fern unrolls a new frond. The name arises from the similarity to the tuning head of a fiddle or bass violin with its tuning pegs. This tightly coiled tip of fern is actually a delicacy that tastes like a cross between asparagus and young spinach. This one grows in the rainforest near the active volcano, Kilauea in the Hawai’ian Volcanoes National Park, on the big Island of Hawai’i.

In a snowstorm on the high road to Taos, NM, we chanced on this grave of a child. It is clear that the child is loved and missed from the profusion of ornamentation and care given the grave.

The La Petite Clos winery is located near the Châteaux de la Loire in France but this stone arch and fence is amongst the vines at Pine Ridge Vinyard north of Napa, CA. The area was fenced off by the owner but the beautiful stone arch allows access to the little enclosure or " La Petite Clos". Without the archway, one must hop the wall! Infrared.

The water has long ago dried up and vanished, as evidenced by the deep cracks, yet the plant remains green and vibrant. An inhabitant of Cuddeback Lake in the Mojave Desert, which is the abandoned and long forgotten site of WW2 Cuddeback Lake Air Force Gunnery Range. It is also one of the emergency landing sites for the X-15 rocket plane! The targets have been replaced with OHV tracks. Desolate and strange. Near Atolia, CA.

Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve features ancient sand dunes covered with centuries-old coast live oak trees. Their massive trunks and gnarled branches twist into all sorts of fantastic shapes. This is a specimen growing near the trail. Near Morro Bay, CA.

When they were discovered, the German word for graves, Graben, were used to describe the narrow walled canyons in Canyonlands National Park, UT. They are a system of linear collapsed valleys caused by the movement of underlying salt layers toward the Colorado River canyon. The grabens begin near the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers and run roughly parallel to Cataract Canyon for 25 km. So they aren't small.

A lone bicycle parked in a bike stand gives the impression of many more bikes behind it due to the reflection of the stands in the window. Transbay transit center, San Francisco.

The rice grass has matured into clouds of very tiny seeds, glistening in the backlit sun. The season of fall in Zion National Park UT has vibrant color in the yellow leaves of cottonwood and grass set against the canyon walls.

Steam rises over the flow from this geyser in Yellowstone National Park but the algae thrive. The unique colors are caused by brown, orange and yellow algae-like bacteria that live in this environment.

Before the National Park Service put in a huge parking lot, Badwater in Death Valley National Park, CA, was a thing of beauty. Telescope Peak in the distance reflects from the small pool that used to collect here at the lowest place on the North American continent. Snow on the peak equates to winter in Death Valley.

The many geysers of the Norris Geyser Basin add their own clouds to those of the pending storm. Well after sunset, the red glow of the sun can barely be seen to illuminate this other worldly landscape in Yellowstone National Park, WY.

Maple leaves have fallen at the edge of the pond which also has tree roots, grass, and cedars. In Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, south of Wawa.

In Big Bend National Park, everything either is poisonous, bites, or in this case has stickers. This is a jungle of prickly pear cactus near Boquillas Canyon.

The shadows dance on the jumble of rocks and dry desert plants along the Cockscomb Reef. This monocline has a series of ridges, called hogbacks, that rise from a rocky base such as this one.

Fall in Zion National Park, UT brings blooming rabbit bush, red live oak leaves and the yellows of cottonwoods all of whom have survived another summer and will lay dormant until spring. In the Clear Creek region.

A blade of grass is curled into a majestic shape as it lies on a bed of moss and plant detritus. Canyon lands National Park, UT has grand scenes all around, yet even greater majesty in the very small, as in this image.

One can see a dragon.. or just cracked paint. This weathered truck hood lies on the shore of Lake Superior near Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, and has been imaged by several notable photographers.

Black basalt boulders lie in a valley of bentonite in the Harnet Desert, Utah. This colorful volcanic ash crushed into soft rock by time has purples, tans, browns, and other unexpected colors.

In a deep crevice at the base of a natural arch, a single strand of spiderweb mimics a waterfall. Fall in Red River Gorge National Landmark, KY, where there are more than 100 sandstone arches.

An early snow clings to fall leaves in the Clear Creek region of Zion National Park, UT. It is cold! The water in the creek has frozen solid. The maple leaves will have to unthaw to fall.

Bristlecone pines are thought to reach an age far greater than that of any other single living organism known, up to nearly 5,000 years. They grow, stunted and half dead, where no other tree can grow in the White Mountains above Lone Pine, CA.

Waves crash and the tide goes out at Point Lobos Reserve near Carmel, CA. The two toned rocks have odd potholes sculpted by these processes.

Proudly sitting atop a pile of baling twine, this old shoe surveys the rest of the junkyard in the glow of the setting sun. Junkyard near Beaver, Utah.

The distant mountain is perfectly reflected in the beaver pond which is lined with cattails. Near Telluride, Colorado, on a jeep road.

The sunrise illuminates the red cliffs and yellow tamarisk salt cedars, but the real action is the reflection on the gently flowing stream. Off Owl Draw Rd near Arches National Park, UT.

With light entering from the distant top of a slit canyon, this wall in Buckskin Gulch glows with an eerie radiance. It is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the southwest United States and may very well be the longest in the world.

A Manzanita grows on bare rock at the edge of a precipice. The rocks are wildly striped in red giving a otherworldly character. Clear Creek region of Zion National Park, Utah.

A pair of massive stone arches majestically bow to make openings within openings. Not every color of the rainbow, the hews tend to browns and reds with that bit of black streak. An amazing sight in Arches National Park, UT.

The river flows between massive canyon walls making confusing reflections of trees and sky blend with the colorful river bottom. West Fork of Oak Creek near Sedona, AZ, in the Coconino National Forest.

The just risen sun reddens the distant mountain which is normally almost colorless. Salt clings to the salt grass. In between the unlikely water standing in this dry place reflects the mountains on a palette of blue mud. Death Valley National Park, CA.

Passing this flow out of the geyser you can't help but notice that these are the exact colors of the Irish national flag and about in the right size. Yellowstone National Park, WY.

In a canyon noted for its vertical walls, the dark desert varnish streaks the walls. Thousands of years are required to form a complete coat of manganese-rich desert varnish so it is rarely found on easily eroded surfaces. Plenty of time for the tree and other plants to grow at the base of the cliff. Capitol Reef near Hanksville, UT.

Besides extreme heat, geysers in Yellowstone National Park have high mineral content which evaporates leaving a white residue. The edges struck me as being intricate as a doily with the colored algae making a true visual feast!

After the sun has well set, the glow on Mono Lake and its incredible Tufa formations makes for an other-worldly view. Tufa is formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water and has become exposed due to diversion of water into the California aqueduct.

The paper birch is green with moss and mildew but its warm colors shine through. There are a variety of mushrooms growing next to it along with ferns at Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada.

Strange red rust is covering the bark of trees and other plants on the Waipoli road to Poli Poli, Maui, HI. Poli Poli is strange itself, with its stand of Redwood trees! But this red covering appears to be only here.

Probably the most beautiful fern I have ever seen. Red leaves are a sign of being distressed by the altitude and lack of water, with silver blotches' where it is totally dead from being frozen. Halemau'u Trail, Haleakala National Park, Maui, HI.

Plants surround extremely fragile cryptobiotic soil in a little garden near the top of Hurrah Pass, UT. The undisturbed condition of it indicates that thousands of years have passed without a single creature stepping here.

A light rain was falling on the huge leaf and red flower that had grown on the overlook at Na Pali on the island of Kuai, Hawaii. Not unusual for the rainiest location on the planet Earth.

All eyes were turned to the massive arch adjacent to this tree. I was more interested in the tree with its brilliant red leaves and graceful trunk and branches. At "Gray's Arch" in Red River Gorge near Slade, KY.

The reflection of the mountain and cloud in the hotel window was blended with the interior staircase inviting one to enter and climb to heaven. There is hope that it’s not full yet indicated by the Vacancy sign!

Just the tools of a rancher that have seen better days. Rusted solid are the gun and pliers, now relegated to being hung on the side of a barn in Rockville, UT.

Just some backlit grass by the side of the road. The front is totally boring but this side shows the yellows and reds as the setting sun shines through. Wild Horse Rd near Goblin Valley, Green River, UT.

The sun winked out over the mountains the instant after this image was made at the Crystal Geyser on the east bank of the Green River in Utah. The odd thing is that this cold water geyser is man-made, and driven by carbon dioxide rather than boiling water! The terraces are just as colorful, though.

This ancient Ponderosa Pine has shed the year's cones which lay near its gnarled roots in abundance. In the Clear Creek region of Zion National Park, UT.

Spring flowers decorate the vertical walls of columnar basalt at Devil's Postpile National Monument, CA. Deep shade enhances the blues of this special place.

Mirror Lake becomes Mirror Meadow. The rains fall as I wade midstream into this flow coming from the Lake/Meadow, Yosemite National Park, CA. The raindrops collect on the swaying plants.

Overlooking a landscape of hoodoos and basalt flows, the South Desert Overlook displays lime colored rock and red sand. This is just another Utah pasture! Capitol Reef National Park, UT.

The great tree hosts a ski run down its limb, or is it a runway? An old cedar tree near Walker's Pass in the Sierra Nevada's.

Resembling the stamen and pistil of a giant flower, the dead tree protrudes from brilliant red "petals" which are maple trees. Clear Creek region, Zion National Park, UT.

An early snow clings to fall leaves in the Clear Creek region of Zion National Park, UT. It is cold! The maple leaves will have to unthaw to fall.

You never know what lurks under the bridge. Not trolls this time, but rather reflections of fall trees and the blue sky in the rippling current. Highway 12 bridge south of Escalante, UT.

The mud silt forms the frame surrounding a reflection of a Canyonlands National Park "graben". A graben is a collapsed or down-dropped block of rock that is bordered on its long sides by faults. "Graben" is German meaning ditch or grave.

A stump rests placidly in the beaver pond, ringed in yellow by last season's Water Hemlock with a snowy pine tree covered shore. Telluride, CO.

The fence around the graveyard is all but down for the ghost town of Bodie, CA. The replacement fence is chain link! Totally out of keeping with the little pioneer mining town but it is not subject to rot.

Belonging to the Hawaiian people, this piece of untouched jungle is located off the beaten path on the west side of Maui north of Kapalua.

The sun catches reflections from bubbles and drops in the swamp water making a host of diamonds (light refracting from the aperture in the lens). Yosemite National Park, CA.

Distressed California Ice Plants growing along Highway 1 near Monterey, CA. Some bloom, some die, others go bright red as they suffer. The complete spectrum of life at Garrapata State Park.

Remnant of a former age, this stamp mill has been idle for many decades. Still fit for birds, a nest can be seen in the top of the structure. Never painted but preserved by the desert dryness, this mining artifact has aged to a rich brown weathered look. It is located south of Randsburg, CA.

A cloud bank is illuminated by the sun, which has completed set. Birds have retreated to their nests. Nightfall in the tufa formation at Mono Lake. Lee Vining, CA.

Ancient Bristlecone pine, perhaps the world’s oldest living thing next to creosote. Gnarled and semi-dead, they grow only on the poor dolomitic outcrops high and near the edge in the high altitude, yet arid White Mountains near Bishop, CA.

Sculpted by wind and rain, the desert supports very few plants including these yucca. Instead of sand, this is the soft-as-talc gypsum, normally a rare constituent of sand because it is water-soluble, except here at White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, NM, where this gypsum dune field is the largest of its kind in the world. Unlike dunes made of quartz-based sand crystals, the gypsum does not readily convert the sun's energy into heat, and thus can be walked upon safely with bare feet, even in the hottest summer months.

The Texas/Mexico border has a wild natural beauty with the Rio Grande flowing placidly along it. No illegal crossing that I could ever see in this natural, wild place. This will be the proposed location of the wall, and its beauty will forever be lost. Big Bend of the Rio Grande, TX.

Waves on Lake Superior have worn the old rocks down and polished them so that they glow in the setting sun. Glaciers exposed these ancient basalt lava flows on the Canadian side as well as the presence of microfossils called Stromatolites, which are 1.9 to 2.3 billion years in age. This sample of the Canadian Shield is on Lake Superior at Twilight Resort near Wawa, Ontario, Canada.

The Goblins gather by the thousands! These "hoodoo rocks" are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles, some as high as several meters. The distinct shapes of these rocks come from an erosion-resistant layer of rock atop softer sandstone. Goblin Valley, north of Hanksville, UT.

Tufas form when calcium-rich spring water mixes with the carbonate-rich waters of the lake, creating these structures that grow beneath the surface. Exposed when L.A. diverted tributaries feeding Mono Lake into the CA aqueduct, this fragile Sand Tufa is at the mercy of visitors and has been disappearing rapidly. Lee Vining, CA.

Often photographed, this 40 year old image from Zabriskie Point was taken before the area was completely loved to death. Go there and compare the wear and tear now compared to the 1970’s. Or see Ansel's images from the 1940's for even less path damage to the tops. Death Valley NP, CA.

Captured in the folds of a giant fuzzy green leaf of a Lamb's ear, this Dandelion seed awaits a strong breeze to extract it so it can be free. So soft to the touch, the hairs on the leaf collect the morning dew and are an adaption to the dryness of the desert. Zion National Park, UT.

Two arches in a single stone wall. The large one spans 71 feet frames the fins of Fin Canyon, stacked atop a much smaller 21-foot arch below it, barely visible from this angle. Arches NP, UT.

The Fiery Furnace, routinely described as a maze of shattered stone fins, holds twisting and turning canyons, slot canyons, and gorges that can easily disorient even seasoned canyoneers. The distant 12,721 foot La Sal Mtn completes the scene. Arches NP, UT.

This enhanced color close-up is a stone cut by local artist Michelle Hoting. The jasper is part of a collection of uncut stones she inherited from her grandfather who founded the Corpus Christi Gem and Mineral Society in 1953. This image taken over 40 years ago in Yellowstone National Park shows how geysers at that time were beautiful deep blue color. Today they are green since tourists threw debris into them, causing them to cool, which in turn causes different extremophiles to be in the water.

A pair of eyes and the bridge of a nose can be imagined in this banded gray Gneiss rock sculpted by the pounding of Lake Superior waves. Very old and containing “gunflint chert”, the earliest preserved fossils of life. The Canadian side.

A swirl of stone on the shore resembles a distant galaxy or a piece of confectionary. This odd round lump (or hole) in the rock is a concretion or nodule, a features common to many sandy or muddy sedimentary rocks. Point Lobos, south of Carmel, CA.

Winter produces spectacles. This one is a little spring running across the road crystallized into a beautiful abstraction. It was slippery, too! Death Valley National Park on Wildrose road.
